Education

The Education Program at SHO aims to contribute to the holistic development of the education sector by improving infrastructure, supporting public schools, and providing inclusive learning opportunities for children and youth. The program ensures access to safe, equitable, and quality education, while also focusing on capacity building for teachers and school staff, and strengthening the role of local communities in the educational process.

Program Objectives:
  • Enhance community participation in the educational process by engaging stakeholders and leveraging local resources.
  • Promote accountability and transparency through effective monitoring and evaluation of educational activities.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive education response plan that addresses the diverse needs of learners.
  • Ensure access to education for all children, recognizing education as a fundamental right and providing equal opportunities for learning.
  • Guarantee safe and secure learning environments by rehabilitating and equipping educational facilities, and ensuring coordination with other sectors (health, nutrition, protection) to strengthen children’s safety and well-being.
  • Promote learner-centered education that fosters active participation and engagement, rather than passive reception.
  • Build the capacity of education personnel by providing training and professional development opportunities, while improving the working conditions of teachers and educators.
Key Activities:
  1. Education sector needs assessments
Conducting comprehensive assessments to identify gaps and priorities in the education sector. The findings guide planning, ensure evidence-based interventions, and improve coordination with other stakeholders.
  2. Establishment of educational centers for children (ages 12–8)
Creating safe and inclusive learning spaces for children, with integrated support from other sectors such as nutrition, health, and protection. This includes providing school meals, promoting personal hygiene, addressing health concerns such as lice and scabies outbreaks, and distributing hygiene kits and school uniforms.
  3. Adolescent learning and adult literacy programs
Providing alternative education opportunities for adolescents who missed out on formal schooling, as well as literacy classes for adults, in order to reduce illiteracy rates and strengthen lifelong learning opportunities.
  4. Capacity building and training for educational staff
Enhancing the skills of teachers, administrators, and service staff through targeted training programs. These activities aim to improve teaching methodologies, strengthen school management, and create a more effective and motivating learning environment.
  5. Psychosocial support training for child-focused staff
Training teachers, social workers, and facilitators to provide psychosocial support for children, ensuring that schools and learning centers are safe environments that respond to students’ psychosocial and social needs.
  6. Educational insurance support
Offering educational sponsorships and financial support to children from vulnerable families to reduce economic barriers and ensure equal access to schooling for all.
  7. Rehabilitation and equipping of public schools
Restoring and upgrading the infrastructure of public schools, including classrooms, sanitation facilities, and learning equipment, to create safe, dignified, and accessible learning environments.
